What should be avoided during cleaning to prevent damage to a finished prosthesis?

Harsh chemicals that could damage

Avoiding harsh chemicals during cleaning protects the prosthesis finish. Finished surfaces—whether acrylic, porcelain, or glazed layers—can be damaged by strong solvents and aggressive cleaners. These chemicals can soften, dissolve, or craze the resin, dull or discolor the glaze, and even weaken bonds between components, compromising both appearance and fit.

For safe cleaning, use mild soap and water with a soft brush or cloth, which cleans without abrading the surface. Ultrasonic cleaning is generally acceptable when used with appropriate materials and settings, but the main idea is to steer clear of harsh chemical agents that could attack the finish.
